The UK is introducing an important change to its Post-Study Work Visa, officially known as the Graduate Route. From 1 January 2027, the post-study work period for most international students completing eligible Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes will be reduced from two years to 18 months. PhD and other doctoral graduates will continue to receive a three-year Graduate visa.

The most important point for students is that the application date determines the visa duration, rather than the graduation date. Students who submit a valid Graduate visa application on or before 31 December 2026 can still receive the current two-year visa. Applications submitted from 1 January 2027 onwards will receive an 18-month visa.

Students cannot apply for the Graduate Route until their university or college has officially reported their course completion to the Home Office. Therefore, students finishing their studies toward the end of 2026 should check with their university about when their completion will be reported and avoid leaving the application until the final days of the year.

The basic eligibility requirements remain unchanged. Applicants must apply from inside the UK while holding valid Student or Tier 4 permission, and they must meet the required study-period conditions. The current application fee is £937, in addition to the Immigration Health Surcharge.

The Graduate Route remains an unsponsored visa, allowing eligible graduates to work without being tied to a particular employer. However, the visa cannot be extended and does not directly lead to settlement. Many graduates use this period to gain employment and potentially switch to another immigration route, such as the Skilled Worker visa.

The shorter 18-month period makes early career planning more important. Graduates may have less time to secure a suitable job and meet the requirements for employer sponsorship before their Graduate visa expires. Students should therefore begin researching potential employers, career opportunities and sponsorship requirements before completing their studies.

For students planning to study in the UK, the change is an important factor to consider alongside tuition fees, living costs, course choices and long-term career plans. Students completing their courses in 2026 should pay particular attention to the 31 December 2026 application deadline and prepare their documents and UKVI account in advance.

Overall, the UK Graduate Route is being shortened for most Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates from 2027, while doctoral graduates remain eligible for three years.
